A Forgotten Billy Fury Masterpiece Reborn — Fans Call It ‘Emotional’ and ‘Historic

Introduction

What an unforgettable year it has been for Colin Paul & The Persuaders.

The band marked their 30th anniversary with a spectacular run of performances, highlighted by a sold-out show at Liverpool’s world-famous Cavern Club and standout concerts in Nottingham, Bournemouth, Devon, Leeds, Manchester, and Birmingham. A major milestone was the special August performance of their Tale of Two Kings show with The Passionettes in Altrincham—an evening the group describes as a true high point of the year.

But with the celebrations came difficult moments.
Bass player Martin had already chosen to step away from the band to explore new musical directions—a departure met with sadness but deep appreciation for his commitment to finish all previously scheduled shows. Then tragedy struck with the sudden passing of their drummer, John, a loss that devastated his family, friends, and every member of the band.

In the wake of such emotional turning points, the group has taken time to reflect on both their past and their future. They have decided to step back from being a “regular,” full-time working band. All existing bookings for 2026 will still be honored, but no additional dates will be taken for now aside from Colin’s solo work.

Another major factor in the decision is that several members of The Persuaders also perform with Rock Back The Clock, making it impossible to accept the growing number of gig offers without constant clashes—more than 50 opportunities had to be turned down this year alone.

There is good news, though.
Colin’s solo career is flourishing and will continue forward with strength. The Persuaders will still reunite for select special events, including their beloved Billy Fury Weekends, Cavern Club appearances, and several Elvis-themed shows. Colin will also perform with other bands at certain venues, with multiple bookings already confirmed. His musical journey with Yesterday Once More is thriving as well.

The band expressed their deepest gratitude to the friends, fans, promoters, DJs, and clubs who have supported them for three remarkable decades.
“Thank you for walking beside us and being part of this incredible journey,” their message reads. “With love and best wishes—Colin, Jeff, Martin and Paul—and of course our dear friend and drummer, John.”

PS: See you at the next gig!

A Message of Thanks

Colin shared heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming number of emails, calls, and messages following John’s passing.
Your words, he said, have been a source of comfort and strength for John’s family and the band during these difficult weeks. They are holding onto treasured memories of their time together, as well as the countless amazing shows they shared with fans.

For now, the group will honor all booked performances, with guest drummers stepping in as needed. With Martin having left the band, former Persuaders member Chris Evans has returned to help on bass—although Martin will still join them in Blackpool for the Billy Fury Weekend.

Looking Ahead: Billy Fury Weekend 2026

Remembering John Wallwork

September 27, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the band announced the unexpected passing of their drummer and beloved friend, John Wallwork, on the morning of September 26.

John had been The Persuaders’ drummer for the past 11 years—and often stepped in even before officially joining. The band describes him as the kindest of men, endlessly generous with his time, an exceptional musician, and a loyal friend. He was, in their words, “the father of our band.”

Their hearts and prayers are with his wife Mal, his family, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.

“Rest easy, brother. We will always love and miss you.”
