Introduction
At 80 years old, Barry Manilow is still breaking records. “I just love making music. I love creating,” he says. Over the weekend, he reached a new milestone at Radio City Music Hall, officially holding the record for the most performances by any artist after completing his 42nd show.
When asked what it feels like to step onto that iconic stage, he laughs. “Can you imagine? This is what I see when I walk out. You’d think it would panic me, but it doesn’t anymore. It’s exciting.” He adds that he never imagined having a career in music at all: “Where I come from, nobody wound up in music or theater. But the music was coming out of my ears.”

Manilow has sold more than 85 million records, yet he admits he can never predict which songs will become hits. “I never know. I just write them, and if I’m lucky, I make a great record out of it.” One song in particular surprised him. “We never thought it would get played on the radio. We took it to a disco—back when discos existed—and asked the DJ to play it. Everyone ran to the dance floor and started dancing like it was the 1940s.”
Despite decades of success, he has no intention of slowing down. He’s preparing for a London residency and an arena tour this summer. “Every night, when there’s an audience out there, I ask my stage manager, ‘Is there anybody out there?’ And I mean it. I’m so grateful they still have a good time with me. I’ll just keep going until I can’t do it anymore. This is just playtime now.”
