Barry Manilow Shares Hopeful Hospital Selfie Amid Lung Cancer Battle: “Better Today!”

Legendary showman Barry Manilow is proving to the world that he is a fighter. At 82 years old, the “Copacabana” singer provided a heartening update to his global fanbase this Friday, January 2, sharing a glimpse into his recovery journey following a recent lung cancer diagnosis.

Taking to Instagram from his hospital bed, the music icon posted a selfie that quickly went viral among his “Fanilows.” Dressed in a standard green hospital gown but sporting a resilient expression, Manilow kept his message short and sweet, captioning the photo: “Better Today!”

The Path to Diagnosis

The update comes just weeks after the singer-songwriter first revealed the sobering news. In December, Manilow disclosed that doctors had discovered a cancerous spot on his left lung. The discovery was somewhat accidental; after battling a persistent bout of bronchitis for eleven weeks, his physician ordered an MRI to ensure there were no underlying issues.

“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed,” Manilow shared in a statement last month. Despite the gravity of the news, he remained remarkably optimistic, citing “pure luck” and a proactive medical team for catching the illness in its earliest stages. Fortunately, the singer noted that his treatment plan would focus on surgery rather than more aggressive measures like chemotherapy or radiation. “Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns,” he joked at the time.

Outpouring of Love from the Music Community

The response to his latest hospital selfie was immediate and filled with warmth. Members of his touring family were among the first to offer public support. Backup singer Melanie Taylor commented, “That’s my boss y’all! He’s making it through the rain! Love you B!” referring to his classic 1974 hit. Longtime collaborator and drummer Matt Sorum echoed the sentiment, writing, “Heal up Barry, much love.”

A Legacy of Resilience

Throughout his storied career, Manilow has been vocal about his dedication to his craft and his health. In recent interviews, he emphasized that he feels “strong” and has no intention of retiring as long as his voice remains intact. He famously joked with Billboard that the night he can no longer hit the F natural in his 1978 hit “Even Now” would be the night he throws in the towel.

For now, the focus remains on rest and recovery. While he is currently taking a necessary hiatus from his Westgate Las Vegas residency, Manilow’s “Better Today” update suggests that the “Mandy” singer is well on his way to returning to the spotlight he has occupied for over five decades.
