“I Didn’t Sound Like Me At All”: Inside Barry Manilow’s Emotional Fight to Save His Voice After Cancer
The moment those iconic piano keys strike, you know it instantly. “Her name was Lola. She was a showgirl…” For over five decades, Barry Manilow’s melodies have been the definitive soundtrack of romance, heartbreak, and celebration. But recently, inside the studio of his Palm Springs home, the music came to a sudden, terrifying halt.
During his very first post-surgery soundcheck, the 82-year-old music legend opened his mouth to sing—and the voice that defined a generation simply wasn’t there.
“My voice, I don’t know whether it’s coming back,” Manilow candidly confessed. “I did my first sound check about a month ago, and I didn’t sound like me at all. I just couldn’t believe that it’s over.”
When he looked up, his bandmates were staring at the floor in silence. For a superstar who admits he always took his powerhouse vocals for granted, the reality was a devastating wake-up call. His legendary career, spanning more than half a century, was suddenly hanging in the balance.
The Secret Battle That Almost Cost Him Everything
The crisis began late last year in the midst of his celebrated Las Vegas residency. A routine MRI in November revealed the news every patient dreads: a spot on his lung. The diagnosis was lung cancer, and doctors ordered immediate surgery to get it out.
Manilow underwent a left lung lobectomy. Though doctors determined he didn’t need chemotherapy or radiation, the recovery took an unexpected, life-threatening turn. He contracted pneumonia and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit.

Seven Days in the ICU: A terrifying week where Manilow admits he prepared for the worst. “There was a couple of moments there that I thought, you know, this may be goodbye,” he revealed, praising his doctors and nurses as “angels and saints.”

The Big Life Questions: Lying in that hospital bed, he began evaluating his legacy. “Have I done everything I wanted to do? Have I been good to people? Have I made people feel good? That’s all I ever wanted to do with my music.”
“I Don’t Want to Stop”
With 13 number-one Adult Contemporary hits and timeless pop classics like Mandy and I Write the Songs, Manilow has nothing left to prove. Yet, his fire refuses to die out.
Amazingly, his music is still conquering the charts. Earlier this year, he secured yet another top 10 hit with “Once Before I Go,” a track from his brand-new album, What a Time. “Unreal,” Manilow laughed. “I haven’t had a top 10 single since Washington crossed the Delaware!”
The High-Stakes Race to the Summer Tour
Now, a high-stakes countdown is underway. Manilow’s highly anticipated new album drops this Friday, and he is slated to return to the road on June 25th for a massive summer tour starting in Las Vegas before traveling nationwide through August.
Hundreds of thousands of fans are holding tickets, praying they will get to hear that unforgettable voice one more time. Manilow insists his body is healed, but the ultimate question mark remains his vocal cords.
“I’m in great shape. I’m ready to go. I just hope my voice is,” Manilow said, fighting back overwhelming emotion. “I really don’t want to cry on stage, but I don’t know whether I’ll be able to hold all that back this time.”
